Y YO CON ESTOS PELOS
Interactive Installation
Display Unit and 99 Cent Merchandise
Digital Print and Ink on paper
20" x 16"
2006 - 2007
Every street of my neighborhood, the Mission District, has a beauty salon. Because the concept of beauty is something cultural, the immigrant that comes from outside feels the impulse to create or reinvent places where to capture this concept of beauty. In this case the Beauty Salon is a space where people from the same cultural background can interact with each other.
Inspired by these beauty salons in the Mission, I created Y Yo Con Estos Pelos, an interactive installation of photographs, sculpture and works on paper. The photographs are self-portraits in which I recreated the image of different women gossiping and sharing secrets while they get their hair done. A display unit with merchandizing from 99 cents stores offers the public test samples to bring home with them.

Site-Specific Installation and Performance
Y Yo Con Estos Pelos was part of MAPP, Mission Arts and Performance Project, a one night event featuring local artists whose work is inspired in the streets of San Francisco's Mission District. For one night I showed this interactive installation in a small local hair salon in collaboration with the owners.
